Las Palmas de Gran Canaria celebrates from Thursday the 26ht to sunday the 29th of December 2013 the 28th edition of the AECIO Regatta – Trophy Ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, to crown the International Sailing Champion of Dinghie (Optimist) Class and also closure of this nautical year in the city, with the participation of more than a hundred children from Norway, Switzerland, Russia and the Spanish Autonomous Comunities of Canary Islands, Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Galicia, Basque Country and Andalusia.
This sailing event to be celebrated at the sailing field of the city, is organised by the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria and the Town Hall through the Council of City of Sea. This one is the last race of the circuit of the Spanish Association of International Dinghie Class (Asociación Española de la Clase Internacional de Optimist, in Spanish) that has been developed along 2013 and which its last venue so far has been Palma de Mallorca on December the 6th, 7th and 8th.
The AECIO Trophy City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria belongs to the Gran Canaria Sail in Winter Series circuit that also includes the Olympic Sailing Week, that was celebrated from the 5th to the 8th of december; the International Trophy of Gran Canaria, to be celebrated from the 10th to the 12th of January 2014 and the International Carnival Race from the 21st to the 23rd of February. All these light sailing events make this city a meeting point for the European sailing during winter.
This also means a closure of the Excellence Cup, the world tour of this class where 123 children between 9 and 15 years of age participate, hence a meeting for the best young sailors of Spain and countries with great sailing tradition in Europe.
The event, besides promoting the city as a winter sailing destination, has quite an important tourist impact since many sailors travel with their families that take advantage of these competition days to spend some holidays in the island and to give farewell to the year far from the low temperatures of their home countries.
The inclusion of the Grancanarian capital city as a seat for this competition of reference at the international sailing agenda means a recognition of the unbeatable conditions this city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria offers for the practise of sailing in winter, the facilities and services offered by the city itself and the sports records of the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria.
