The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Congress Hall of the Canaries, in collaboration with the Gran Canaria Convention Bureau and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, presented today, Wednesday the 13th of March, the City’s candidacy for hosting the 2nd International Congress of Tourist Quality, convened for next autumn by the Spanish Institute for Tourist Quality (ICTE).
The congress foresees to call together more than 500 national and international experts to discuss over the importance of quality in the tourist sector. The candidacy of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria presents the Congress Hall of the Canaries – Alfredo Kraus as the workplace, both for preparatory meetings and for the event sessions. In addition, proposed dates for the event are the 9th, 10th and 11th of October 2013.
The Congress Hall of the Canaries presents as guarantee its two Certificates of Quality: the ISO 9001:2008, awarded in 2002 by the Spanish Association for Normalisation and Certification AENOR, and the “Q” for Tourist Quality awarded in 2009, and renewed in 2012, by the Spanish Institute for Tourist Quality (ICTE). In this regard, it is the one and only congress infrastructure to have been awarded such distinction in the Canaries, and one of the five congress halls to have both certificates in Spain.
The City Councillor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Pablo Barbero, stated that the Capital City of Gran Canaria presents itself as an urban congress seat “firmly established in the national circuit, and with quality standards on giving services, developed by the City Council and the Congress Hall with the product LPA Meetings”.
The nomination of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be voted in the next weeks by the Spanish Institute for Tourist Quality (ICTE), which will select three finalist cities before deciding on the final venue.
City Councillor of Tourism of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Pablo Barbero, has attended today, Thursday the 21st of February, the Alfredo Kraus Congress Hall of the Canaries to the opening of the 26th National Congress of the Spanish Federation of Professional Congress Organising Enterprises (OPC Spain) that will take place from today until Saturday the 23rd of February with more than a hundred experts that hose the Capital City of Gran Canaria to assess and discuss about the present and future of the sector.
The City Councillor explained that this is considered as “congress of congresses” and added that this is “an excellent opportunity to promote the city as a congress city among professionals that can contract the destination Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to celebrate these events”.
In this regard, the City Council will take advantage of the presence of these professionals to show the destination, services and facilities this city offers, including guided visits to the Old Town, to keep the leadership of the Grancanarian capital as one of the preferred destinations of the Canaries by this sector.
Mr. Barbero reminded that congresses have a high incidence on the tourist offer, on the hotel, restaurant, commercial, and cultural networks, as well as the supplying enterprises of translation, hostess, sound and lighting, and highlighted that the average daily spend by congress tourists is around 148.16€.
One of the subjects to be discusses in this professional meeting is the need to have a network of transport conveniently structured, allowing the city to strengthen as congress destination.
Among the actions carried by the City Council to strengthen the city as a congress destination is the signing of a collaboration agreement with the Alfredo Kraus Congress Hall that will lead to attract the celebration of professional meetings in the city under the brand “LPA Meeting”
Such agreement between these two institutions will be valid for a period of three years, and includes a series of grants to those professional and scientific, national and international societies, that chose the congress Hall of the Canaries to celebrate meetings, workshops, conventions, and congresses between 2013 and 2015.
